History of Lebanon, New Hampshire
Lebanon, New Hampshire has a long and interesting history. It is located in the western part of the state, near the border of Vermont and was originally part of an area known as New Hampshire’s “Upper Valley”. The first settlers in the area were mostly farmers from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island who were looking for land to farm. The first permanent settlement in Lebanon was established in 1767 by a group of men led by Captain Henry Wyman.
The land that would become Lebanon was initially known as Wymanstown. In 1768, it was incorporated as a town under its current name of Lebanon, which is believed to have been chosen due to its location near the Connecticut River and its relative proximity to the Lebanese Mountains in Vermont.
In its early years, Lebanon served as an important center for trade and commerce due to its location at the intersection of two major roads: one running east-west between Hanover (New Hampshire) and Hartford (Connecticut) and another running north-south between Boston (Massachusetts) and Montreal (Quebec).
